The CLCGB National Band was formed in 1979 to bring together the musical talents of members of the CLCGB from across the country. At its height had over 140 playing members. Over the last thirty years, under the direction of its Director of Music – Mike Syrett, the band has performed across the UK and has done tours in the USA, Germany, the Czech Republic, Holland, Belgium and Spain.
In the early 90s!
The band has taken part in some prestigious events such as The Royal Tournament, the opening of the CLCGB National Headquarters by Her Majesty the Queen and was the first English band to perform at the Brugges International Tattoo in Belgium. These events have been accompanied by annual concerts all over the country, including our 2008 joint concert with The Band of HM Royal Logistics Corp.
Over the years members of the band, who have benefitted from their experience with the band, have gone on to become teachers, doctors, musicians and over sixty who have gone on to serve in HM forces – including nearly fifty current or former Royal Marines Musicians or Buglers. The band develops skills that are useful in all walks of life!
The last two years has seen a big change in the band. The band has moved from its home of twenty-eight years in Darlaston near Walsall, to Smallwood Manor in Uttoxeter. The band has settled in and played at a few local events since arriving. During the summer, our long serving and well respected Director of Music, Mike Syrett retired from the band handing over to our new management team.
The new management team is very strong and picked from experienced and professional senior members who are keen to take the band forward into the start of the band’s next thirty years, so keep a watch out for upcoming events.
